OPM or optical power meter is a device for testing the average power in general  fiber  optic systems. Power meters are usually calibrated following a NIST standard. An optical power meter can measure a wide spectrum of light, however the calibration does depend on the  wavelength of the optics involved. The OPM usually measures the average power in an optical signal.

An OPM has a calibrated sensor. This consists of a photodiode. On the display unit, the optical power  that has been measured and the optical wavelength that has been set is displayed. NIST standard is usually used for caliberation of the meter. When measuring power with an Optical power meter attach the meter to the cable. Turn on the transmitter, and view the meter’s measurement in it’s display. It can be used as a standalone meter, or in combination with other parts for building a much larger instrument as it’s sub-system. Sometimes optical power meters are combined with an Optical Light Source (OLS) or Visual Fault Locator (VFL). Firstly the meter must be set to the correct test wavelength.

Secondly if there is a mix of other  wave lengths then you may end up with wrong results. It is used as A power meter is used to test loss as too. The meter will also measure the lost power in every part of the cable. The user should take the precaution safety precautions of  wearing eye protection when testing fiber optic cables with a power meter.
